From the office of the Ag. Governor
Students' Village Hostel, University of Jos.
All protocols observed
Distinguished ladies and gentle men:
We are gradually coming to the end of our tenure and give way to yet another government.
Those who care enough to speak the truth can attest to the fact of this government's selfless service and what is expected of us in taking our dear hostel to the next level.
Towards the end of last session, we witnessed a lot of activities in celebration of our annual village week that distinguish us, as villagites. In all the activities, including our pageantry, one is awe struck by the great energy and style displayed by our people in all their involvements. Such energies, charisma and ingenuity are what make us distinct as villagites and we should all endeavor to translate them into other facets of our lives.
We should therefore henceforth join hands in maintaining our uniqueness and villagites characteristic drive for excellence and great achievements.
Our government from the very onset was and has always been very determined to do whatever it takes to move village hostel forward and for this, I call on all villagites to join us so that we can reverse the many ills of the past and support us in maintaining the new face of students' village hostel were stakeholder ship is only recognised when a person has helped in the development of our dear hostel.
When I assumed office as your acting governor, my resolve was to depart from ad hoc tendencies of past governance, so that we can lay a sound foundation for the socio_academic development of our hostel.
I have certainly learnt from and leaned on shoulders of great minds, some of which include: Dr. Myles Munroe "when the purpose of a thing is not known, abuse is inevitable"
Theodore Roosevelt "Nothing in the world is worth having or worth doing unless it means effort, pain, difficulty....I have never in my life envied a human being who led an easy life. I have envied a great many people who led difficult lives and led them well"
Ronald Reagan "there is no limit to the amount of good you can do if you don't care who gets the credit"
And the Bible "it is more blessed to give than to receive"
Within the little time we spent in office even without funds from anywhere, we set for ourselves, visions and goals and the results are visible for everyone to see. These include:
1. We solicited with 'Moulds Nig. Ltd' to supply us crushed stones as part of their corporate social responsibility in order to rehabilitate our pot hole roads in the hostel which they delivered and we can all see what that has done to our roads.
2. National association of Plateau state students "NAPSS" Unijos chapter came to our rescue with helping us solve a water problem in the hostel by fixing a manual borehole at compound 7. All thanks to the leadership of such a great union.
3. Student union Government "SUG" caretaker committee also heard our cry and provided us with a motorised borehole at compound 4.
4. We developed a process to expedite repairs of physical facilities in the hostel e.g the fixing of compound A, C, 1,2 and 3 suckaway pipes and compound 9 $ 10 in process, ensuring the restoration of power in good time whenever there was an outbreak.
The issue of having light on one side when the generator is put on is now a thing of the past as the second generator is now working because we refused to relent insisting on the management to do so; thanks to the maintenance officer who was behind us as well as the operator.
We ensured the street lights in the hostel were restored; thanks to the hostel maintenance officer; Oga Babuje and our able electrician; Mr. Francis.
We ensured the immediate repair of the manual bore hole at the field when it got spoiled; thanks to our able plumber; Mr. Solomon
5. Construction of the longest pedestrian bridge in west Africa was done by the management during our time and now students can safely move to and fro the health service centre as well as the Naraguta campus of the university from students' village comfortably; thanks to the school management who saw this need.
6. We delivered a successful village week despite all odds and even held an interactive talk show on the theme "Identifying your talents and maximizing your potentials" with Chief operation officer of Compunet ltd; Mr. Ifeanyi Ejindu who represented his boss; Mr. Kolawole Ojo MNI as our main speaker.
7. We now have increased number of security personnels in the hostel; thanks to the base officer
8. We now have a more student_friendly hall officer/matron and a more serene environment; thanks to both the hall officer and matron who came to a consensus with us.
9. We wrote and met with Plateau state water board to help rehabilitate our water reservoir; though no clear response yet but we are still hopeful
10. We wrote the Chairman; house committee on youth and sports, Plateau state house of assembly and met with his P.A to see how our sporting facilities can be rehabilitated, though yet to receive a formal response, we await a response.
11. Supply of welfare materials to students during exams period; thanks to SUG caretaker committee.
Several other things which we would of necessity not highlight here for time and space.
Things we were unable to complete due to lack of funds and pray the next government amongst it's other projects ensure they are being carried out since funds would be made available:
1. Rehabilitation of solar energy bore hole at compound C
2. Rehabilitation of sporting facilities
3. Security lights in all compounds
4. Drying lines in all compounds
5. Fixing of all bad tap heads in the hostel
6. Publication of a magazine and/ a calender
And I sincerely pray that God helps the next government to achieve even greater feat than we have been able to.
Finally, I would like to end with the words of Ken Blanchard "None of us is as smart as all of us"
............Thank you
Signed
John Paul Yerima
